Today with PT Ryan was sitting up (with them holding him) on the edge of the bed and his feet were on a stool. His foot slipped off and they asked him to put it back on the stool and he did. This apparently (I was not there) happened 2 more times. So that is the good news.
Bad news is that Ryan may have a blockage in his colon or may have an illius?. He is going back down for a CT scan tomorrow to check this out.

The PT progress is great news! It sounds like he's regained a lot of his strength already, even with the current bodily woes.
ReplyDeleteI took this from the Merck pharmaceuticals website:
"Ileus is a temporary arrest of intestinal peristalsis. It occurs most commonly after abdominal surgery, particularly when the intestines have been manipulated. Symptoms are nausea, vomiting, and vague abdominal discomfort. Diagnosis is based on x‑ray findings and clinical impression. Treatment is supportive, with nasogastric suction and IV fluids."
As terrible as it is that Ryan is having to go through yet another issue, it's a far cry from the peritonitis and sepsis that he's been suffering from. He can probably tackle this like it's child's play at this point.
Keep a positive heart! He's making progress again... don't forget what the doctors said about it being measured in weeks and months, not so much in days...

Chan- Just to clarify they have already being doing all of the above things you mentioned which are not working. Which is why they believe it may be a blockage and not just Ileus which we already know he has been dealing with for awhile (after the sepsis and the two major abdominal surgeries he has had this). When I mention the IV fluids and NG tube that is the same as the tx you mentioned but he has had these for awhile now. His blockage can actually be worse and require more surgery and the infection in his colon can actually lead to more sepsis. so we just dont know yet but it is serious. Cerissa
ReplyDeleteCerissa, I know it is hard to take all these problems, but please try to concentrate on the positive. He is not paralized, he is moving his limbs. His brain is functioning, he followed a command. That is huge. Just keep talking to him and encouraging him and telling him what is happening to him. Been there!
ReplyDeleteWe pray the doctors will be able to stop the blockage and ileus problem. We cannot minimize the good news here: Ryan was able to answer the command when asked to put his foot back on the stool. This is really good news. We pray the good news will continue and will outweigh the bad news from now until he is fully recovered!!!
